The exam is conducted for various posts and the scheme of exam depends on the level of profiles:

Permanent Commission: Permanent Commissioned Officers get their training at either National Defense Academy Pune or Indian Military Academy Dehradun. These training are for job profiles that you are supposed to do till your retirement.

Short Service Commission: Under short service commission a candidate serves in the Army for an initial tenure of 10 years. After the completion of this tenure of 10 years, a candidate can opt for Permanent Commission. If he gets selected in Permanent Commission then he serves in the Army till retirement but if not then the candidate can serve Army for up-to 4 years for an extended term. They could also resign during this extendable 4 years.

Short Service Commission for Women (Under Technical & Non-technical Verticals)

Women have also started joining the Indian Army and are provided all possible opportunities for the same. The selection of women candidates in Army is made by the Short Service Commission and the criteria is different for different posts.
For Technical Posts:the candidates need to have a BE or B.tech degree. The recruitments for these posts are made by The Recruiting Directorate of Army Headquarters.
For Non-technical Streams :The candidates need to have cleared the UPSC Combined Defense Services exam, SSB interview, Physical Fitness and Medical examination is the standard process to get commissioned.

Post Selection, women candidates are sent to Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai for further training.Also, the option of Permanent Commission is open for women too but the post remains in the Education Branch & Judge Advocate.

Indian Army Exam Pattern:

  • There are two sections in the exam.
  • General knowledge (05 questions)- 20 marks
  • General Science(05 question) – 20 marks
  • Mathematics (10 questions)- 40 marks
  • Computer science (05 question)- 20 marks

For Candidates who want to appear for technical posts have to go through a different exam which is:

University Entry Scheme UES

  • Eligibility for the exam is that the candidate should have passed BE or B.Tech.
  • Age Limit: 19 to 25 Years

Technical Graduate Course TGC

  • A Master’s Degree or a degree in BE or B.Tech.
  • Age Limit: 23 to 27 Years

Once the candidate get through the exam he has to go through the following criterion Service Selection Board Exam, Interview, Physical Fitness & Medical Examination.
After selection, candidates are first trained at IMA, Dehradun and then serve in the army and after that on completion of one year of service; they are promoted to senior levels.

Short Service Commission (Technical)

  • Eligibility: BE or B.Tech
  • Age Limit For Men: 20 to 27 Years
  • Age Limit For Women: 19 to 25 Years

Once the candidate get through the exam he has to go through the following criterion Service Selection Board Exam, Interview, Physical Fitness & Medical Examination.
After selection, candidates are given 49 weeks training at Officers Training Academy, Chennai. Thereafter, they will be commissioned for 10 years in Indian Army with extendable 4 years option.

National Defense Academy NDA

  • Eligibility: The Candidate need to have passed High School or Intermediate.
  • Age Limit For Men: 16.5 to 19 Years

The Candidate should have cleared UPSC, SSB, Physical Fitness & Medical Examination.
Indian Military Academy IMA

  • Eligibility: The Candidate need to have passed graduation with a decent percentage.
  • Age Limit For Men: 19 to 24 Years

The Candidate should have cleared UPSC, SSB, Physical Fitness & Medical Examination.
